I thought I was. I thought that if I saw one more faux menu on a kitchen blackboard, I would fall into a fit of uncontrollable eye-rolling. But on a recent photoshoot (for my day job), I started talking movies with the photographer. We discovered we both loved I Heart Huckabees, which got me thinking about its blanket theory and the chalkboard wall covered with overlapping squares as a way to show how interconnected we all are. I remembered how much I loved that chalkboard — so smart, so beautiful — and realized that something akin to abstract art in chalk is still on my list of do’s. Faux cute is not. Take a look at some of my favourites, beauties all, and not a fake shopping list or saccharine inspirational “poem” among them.
