In blogging for another site, I shared my favourite falling down house with readers, an old farmhouse on The Talbot Trail (Hwy 3, between London and Chatham, Ontario). I compared it with the house in my favourite documentary, Grey Gardens. They both break my heart. And obviously houses falling into ruin have the same effect on others, if the number of comments and emails regarding this old beauty is any indicator. In fact, the shot I took, seen above, has ended up on countless blogs and old house websites (royalties, please?), so many that I know it is a much-loved charmer. Take a look at the house from a different angle, and an interior shot (and I was scared taking that picture, lest the house fall in on me, but just look at the depth of that baseboard trim!).
Here is the original Grey Gardens, from the New York Times’ slideshow, when it had fallen into disrepair.
Both Grey Gardens and my Talbot Trail lovely have turned me onto houses fallen into ruin. Now an obsessed old house hunter, I am constantly stopping by the side of the road to take shots of other heartbreakers. Stay tuned, I’ll share them as I find them.
